Day 308/365: Sugarleaf Makati Opening Soon!

Your Haven Of Health

Recognising the clamour for a one-stop shop of healthy food items in the metropolis, Sugarleaf debuted in West Greenhills, San Juan in February 2011 followed by Urdaneta Village, in Makati by November 2011.

Living up to its mission of providing “foods that nourish” Sugarleaf features Healthy Picks, a mini-mart of locally-sourced produce from certified organic farms, which is the main ingredient of the restaurant’s all-day dining menu.

All items are available for take away and delivery.  A cozy dining area of up to 30 persons is available for intimate events such as reunions and meetings.

A wide selection of natural and organically-produced goods from the Philippines and overseas include free-range chicken, eggs, pork, yoghurt, kombucha, highland coffee & rice, natural sweeteners, home-made dips & dressings, air-dried tea, snacks among others.  Raw and super food ingredients for vegetarians and raw foodies are also available.

Health and wellness talks, seminars and workshops go beyond food and complement the Sugarleaf experience.

Sugarleaf is named after stevia, a plant whose leaves possess an intense sweetening capability.  Though somewhat controversial in its earlier years, stevia is totally safe and is highly regarded because it has anti-oxidant properties, has zero calories, and doesn’t affect blood sugar levels.

Sugarleaf imbibes sweetness, happy thoughts and feelings linked with healthy living and organic lifestyle.

Healthy Is The New COOL!  Healthy food can be hip, young, delicious and great enjoyed with friends and family.

Sweety Pies and Jello’s Ice Cream debut at Sugarleaf…foods that nourish

Jello’s Ice Cream is the brand given by Rman Lorenzo for Angelo’s new ice cream line. As per Angelo “I’ve always dreamed of having an ice cream parlour when I was a kid. Little did I know that Sugarleaf would be the avenue to achieve this yet still be able to give a lot of health benefits to its consumers.” Most flavours are vegan (coconut milk base provides creaminess without dairy products and cholesterol), low in fat and sugar, and contain billions of probiotics from the incorporation of Goody Coco-kefir. Thanks to Jeren Cabral – Lorenzo who formulated the coco kefir fermentation to make Jello’s Ice Cream tastes good!

Jello's Probiotic Ice Cream and Sweety Pies DebutJIC features five bestselling flavours Vegan jolly green (spirulina, green tea and malunggay), Triple chocolate (raw cacao-tsokolate-cocoa), Vegan 5-berry (acai-blueberry-cherry-raspberry-strawberry), Cherry-pistachio and Vegan vanilla2 bean. Limited-edition flavours include blueberry cheesecake, sapin-sapin, macaroon, mung bean mocha, sans rival, pastillas de leche, Arabica almond and more.

With prior notice, special orders for your dream ice cream flavour combination can be created in a healthier version! Special orders for macadamia-chocolate, strawberry-kiwi and after 8 (chocolate mint) have been made for loyal customers. “We’ve had customers who shared that they have family members who do not like ice cream but have completely consumed entire packs of Jello’s Ice Cream.”

Sweety Pies…baked healthier is the brainchild of Gina Yambot who is an advocate of healthier dining options. Most cakes and pastries use coconut sugar, a natural sweetener that is low-glycemic and can be enjoyed by diabetics (still in moderate amounts). Refined white sugar is completely avoided in the entire restaurant. Wheat flour is used to provide additional fibre. Best sellers include organic carrot cake, sans rival, nut pies (macadamia, pecan and almond) and kefir cheesecake – creamy but low-fat and just very slightly tart as cream cheese is substituted with kefir curds sweetened with raw wild honey topped with organic blueberry.

Jello’s Ice Cream and Sweety Pies strengthen its roster of healthy-eats including Healthy Picks organic fruits, vegetables and prepared products and Goody Kefir probiotic line of food and beverages.

Drop by Sugarleaf located at G/F Health Cube Building, 226 Wilson Street, West Greenhills in San Juan (between Kink Cakes and BDO) and G/2F of MEDICard Lifestyle Centre at the corner of Paseo de Roxas and Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue!

MILK KEFIR STORY

by Jeren Cabral-Lorenzo

As a Food Technologist and Enzyme Therapist, I am very curious with and interested in natural foodstuffs that strengthen our body and boost our immune system. This inquisitiveness led me to study food enzymes and their beneficial effects to our physical well-being. With this knowledge, I was able to help quite a number of people who were suffering from different kinds of incurable diseases like diabetes, asthma, lupus, arthritis and cancer, to name a few.

About a year ago, my Chinese friend introduced me to kefir. He’s taking it on a daily basis to cure his illnesses. Curious, I started my research works on kefir immediately. Impressed with my findings, I began experimenting and developing “milk kefir” out of raw milk and a tablespoonful of kefir grains.

Kefir is a cultured, enzyme-rich food (both microbial and digestive enzymes) filled with friendly micro-organisms that help balance our “inner ecosystem.” Though it tastes a bit sour, kefir is refreshing and more nutritious and therapeutic than yogurt because it supplies complete protein, essential minerals, and valuable B vitamins.

After numerous trials and errors, I was able to master the fermentation process of kefir using fresh raw milk. As my “milk kefir” passed the discriminating taste of my friends, I began to market it to my other acquaintances who recommended it to their own set of friends and acquaintances. As the demand for it increases, I decided to venture into mass production. Those familiar with its selling price in the market will certainly be surprised to find out that my pre-introductory price is only P300.00 per liter.

To maximize its health benefits, I integrated milk kefir in a 7-day diet program. So far, all of those who underwent this diet program got positive results like regular bowel movement, greater stamina, resistance to illnesses, and weight loss of 5 to 10 pounds.

Studies show that kefir could treat or cure allergies, acne, arthritis, rheumatism, wrinkles, gout, liver diseases, kidney stones, gastritis, pancreatitis, ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, hypertension, heart diseases, lung infections, yeast infection, and many other illnesses.

To make kefir more enjoyable and refreshing, we may add fresh fruits, muscovado or honey into it. With this special mix, our children will surely love it and ask for more.

Promoting Good Health! Prolonging Good Life!

Have a goody life,

Mr & Mrs Marjoree “Jeren” Cabral and Rman Nepomuceno Lorenzo

Jeren, a trained food technologist and enzyme therapist started Goody Kefir after being introduced to it by Filipino-Chinese friends in 2008. After experimenting on different formulations, using different ingredients and techniques, she developed the right balance of its exceptional health benefits and pleasant taste that appeal to all ages.

“We at Goody Kefir believe on the ancient tradition where kefir started and our cost value is sharing its real purpose. We sell directly and give accreditation to those who believe on its purpose for health and promoting a balance healthy lifestyle. We sell directly and encourage customers to check out our products’ authenticity (flavour and value) versus those who sell through syndicated schemes”.

Day 245/365: Goody Goody Kefir and I Gotcha Kombucha Seminar @ Sugarleaf

September 3, 2011

Goody goody kefir and I gotcha kombucha! A talk on real energising refreshment – 3 September, Saturday from 2pm to 5pm

Real energising refreshment comes from getting nourishment from your beverage and not just sugar, flavourings and colourings.

Kefir and kombucha are two beverages with ancient origins that have withstood the test of time as they have potent health benefits – almost too good to be true for a lot of people but even more people from all over the world attest to its curative powers. And with talented kefir and kombucha brewers Marjoree “Jeren” Cabral-Lorenzo of Goody Kefir and Brent Metken of Planet Health Kombucha, these otherwise obscure beverages are now fast gaining popularity amongst health buffs and other people in the Metropolis.

Jeren and Brent discussed kefir and kombucha’s origins and health benefits. Sugarleaf’s Gina S. Yambot also shows some practical easy-to-do recipes using kefir and kombucha in other applications to make it even more appetising to everyone of all ages.

And yours truly, discussed the kefir living testimony on how it helped me for the past 2 years now without any medicines even for my colds/flu but energizes me further on my daily active lifestyle.

LaTOP

LaTOP Multi-purpose cooperative was organised by a La Trinidad Local Government Unit in partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute-Cordillera Administrative Region in 2005. From its humble beginnings, it has grown to over 70 farming groups from different regions and is supported by AusAID of the Australian Government and the Foundation for a Sustainable Society, Inc.

LaTOP aims to provide an alternative livelihood for farmers and meet a growing number of customers’ clamour for safe produce – from alugbati to zucchini.

Differentiatiating LaTOP produce from others is the stamp of approval from the OCCP (Organic Certification Council of the Philippines) which monitors the production of crops. Apart from guaranteeing that synthetic fertilisers and hormones, insecticides and herbicides, manure and urea are not used, farmers must apply measures to prevent topsoil erosion and soil salination to ensure sustainability.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Apart from espousing healthy living and eating to everyone, Sugarleaf supports a great number of farmers utilising organic means to grow their produce. In future, Sugarleaf aims to encourage landowners to consider organic and sustainable farming methods. Seminars on organic farming, healthy cooking and eating will be offered to the public.

Fine handmade Mt. Pinatubo ash-glazed ceramics are also available and make great personal and corporate gift items as well as for home use. Proceeds of the sale of these ceramics are donated to the Entrepreneur Volunteer Assistance Charity Foundation (EVACF) for the improvement of the lives of indigenous peoples in the country.

Sugarleaf is located at the ground floor of the Health Cube Building, 226 Wilson Street, West Greenhills, San Juan, Metro Manila. Open 7am-9pm Mondays to Sundays.
