Eating Organic Foods at Sugarleaf

Eating Organic Foods at Sugarleaf

Organic refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. The goal in organic farming is to maintain and replenish the soil fertility without using toxic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. “Certified Organic” means the item has been grown in accordance with strict uniform standards that are verified by an independent state or private organization.

Dr. Alan Greene of Stanford’s Children’s Hospital neatly summarizes the argument for organics: “Eat organic produce. Your immune system won’t waste energy trying to fight off the toxins that are sprayed on conventional fruits and vegetables.” Eating organics frees up your immune system and antioxidants to do their evolutionarily evolved job, which is to fight off pathogens, cancer, and other diseases originating from natural environmental sources. Your body’s natural defense mechanisms are incredible strong, but like anything else, they can only handle so much attack. To keep your defensive line from being spread too thin, you should therefore limit exposure to toxins (and stress) as much as possible. It’s important to realize that consuming pesticides and herbicides — even if they have not been found to be directly cardinogenic — can, in effect, lead to cancer if they use up your supply of antioxidants, which would otherwise have prevented cancer that was generated from another source.

It’s true that organic foods typically cost more than conventional, but this may be true only in the short-term. After you adopt a healthier lifestyle with healthier food choices, including organics, you may find yourself frequenting the doctor’s office much less and spending less on medications — over the counter and prescriptions — and not to mention a lower chance of being prematurely dead. It’s important to know that organically produced foods have to meet rigorous governing regulations in all aspects of production. It’s labor and management-intensive, usually produced on smaller farms, which don’t benefit from economies of scale. These factors combine, causing the cost to be higher. But as the saying goes, “you get what you pay for.”

Organics typically cost about twice as much as conventionally produced food. To put things in perspective, consider bottled water. I know many people who would just about die of thirst before drinking tap water; for them, it’s bottled or nothing. But when you do the math, bottled water is about 300-600 times more expensive than tap water, and for good reason. But, depending on which municipality you live in, your tap water might actually be safer and healthier than eating conventionally produced foods. It really doesn’t make sense to spend money on bottled water and then eat foods that are not grown organically.

Some of the many benefits of eating organic foods are:

  1. Superior nutrition: Organics have up to 300% more vitamins and minerals than conventionally grown foods.
  2. They have greater flavor. Many top chefs use only organic foods.
  3. Reduced intake of chemicals and heavy metals.
  4. Decreased exposure to carcinogens.
  5. Better working conditions for farmers and workers.
  6. No genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  7. Much better for the environment.

Pacquiao-Marquez III Controversial Match @ Medicard Lifestyle Center

November 12, 2011

It was my first time to watch a live telecast of Pacquiao’s boxing fight. Thanks to Medicard Lifestyle Center in Makati for converting their grand lobby as a viewing facility for their partners and guests. And being a new home of Sugarleaf, we were able to served their guest with Organic Coffee and Fresh Juices courtesy of Matstone Philippines. Great refreshing and healing concoctions of Malunggay-Pineapple and Sayote-Cucumber-Yacon!

How was the fight? From Round 1 to 7 and based on how the camera is being rolled to capture each punch, I know it was Marquez whom I truly admire on how he counter attacks and made his connecting punch a success. Round 8 to 12 is a mix of Pacquiao and Marquez punches but in favor of Marquez as how it was being covered by media. And yes, being totally ignorant on the boxing rules and how it is being scored, in my eyes and “connecting punch” points, the winner should be Marquez. However there are professional judges who were all there watching and observing each punch, moves, and attacks. The boxing rules applies and based on my research, this is how it works (c/o boxing.isport.com)

The Four Components of Boxing Scoring

Scoring in professional boxing is rather subjective in nature. Controversy seems to arise after every close bout, and official scorers are often scorned by viewers that deemed the fight far from close.

Three ringside judges score bouts based on four factors:

1. Clean punching: “Clean” punches are punches that land on the face/side of the head and the front/side of the torso.
2. Effective aggressiveness: A boxer demonstrates this trait when he consistently and successfully moves forward in a controlled manner.
3. Ring generalship: The judges favor the fighter who controls the pace and style of the bout.
4. Defense: Boxers that skillfully incorporate defensive maneuvers receive credit in this area.

Professional bouts are scored on a round-by-round basis, and judges are supposed to assign their scores with each of the above factors equally in mind. It shouldn’t come as a shock, though, that certain judges favor certain characteristics. In any circumstance, the four criteria are used – in addition to knockdowns and committed fouls – as a way of assigning points under the 10-point Must System.

Ten-point Must System

Judges use the 10-Point Must System in professional bouts. This system assigns ten points to the winner of each round. The loser receives nine points for a close round, eight points if he was knocked down or dominated, and seven points if he was knocked down twice. If a round is even and neither boxer was knocked down, both boxers receive 10 points. If each boxer was knocked down once, the knockdowns are disregarded and the winner of the round receives 10 points, while the loser receives nine points.

The boxer with more accumulated points at the end of the match is the winner, as long as two of the three judges are in agreement. The four possible decisions of a bout that goes the distance are as follows:

Unanimous decision: All three judges score the same boxer as the winner.
Split decision: Two of the three judges score in favor of one boxer, who is declared the winner, despite the fact that the third judge ruled in favor of the other boxer.
Majority decision: Two of the three judges score in favor of one boxer, who is declared the winner, despite the fact that the third judge ruled the contest a draw.
Draw:
If at least two judges have the match as tied, then a draw will be declared. Also, a draw occurs if one judge has one winner, another judge has a different winner, and the third judge has a draw.

A bout can also be stopped earlier than the scheduled duration due to Knockout (KO) or Technical Knockout (TKO). Once a boxer gets to his feet after being knocked down, he must be approved to continue by the referee. If the boxer is unable to recover from the knockdown within ten seconds, his opponent wins by way of knockout. A referee can also choose to stop a fight at any point to protect a boxer from severe injury. In this case, the boxer loses by Technical Knockout.

Respecting the Decision

Professional boxers train for months in preparation for a bout. A controversial decision can be devastating for a boxer who’s trained hard and feels he has won the bout. Keep in mind that the judges are only human, and are contracted to score the bout as fairly and honestly as possible.

Professionals, in most cases, have already participated in a significant amount of amateur matches and understand there is a possibility of disappointment. They focus solely on fighting to the best of their ability, and try to take the decision out of the judges’ hands. If you are dominant in the ring, there is less of a chance that you will be disappointed and confused by the decision. Professionals know they must train hard to improve their skills so that they can be confident of the decision before it occurs. They hope the match won’t have to come down to a decision, and instead focus on knocking out their opponent.

Well, now we understand how he won the fight. He is aggressive in his attacks, his style conquers the ring, and definitely a very good defense in spite of those “connecting punches” of Marquez as what we’ve watched based on a “camera’s perspective”. Now I am curious to know if the camera man is a Mexican :)

Anyway, great match! and very cool place to watch it! Thanks too to Sole Academy for their loot bags and raffle prizes!

Kudos to you Manny Pacquiao! Pinoy Rules! Congratulations!

Day 303/365: Malabon's Best

October 31, 2011

If you happen to read my Day 302, where I experience a First Day Last Day moment. Today is the continuation of my life breakthroughs. I believe I am now ready to face a long challenge that is holding me back for almost 15 years now, to face my own father. My story is an open book for my friends and colleagues, most to those who knows my mother and our sad stories. It is a victim stories which I have to put an end and move to a present life.

I was born in Malabon, raised and grew up in Malabon for 23 years before I decided to move out from our house, and hop houses due to serious family problems. It was my victim story but to cut the story short, I have learned from it and being a father now – it is time for me to do this they so called ‘miraculous gestures’

As early as 9am, we are ready and left our home with my family, brother, sister-in law and her sons and our destination is to visit our old house in Malabon. I am not sure what awaits us, so we first had our lunch at Judy Ann’s Restaurant Malabon. My Uncle Bino actually keeps on boasting their Crispy Pata (Pork Knuckles) and to be honest, I’d been seeing this restaurant for ages but I havent tried it. Anyway, this is time to fill in our tummy’s by Malabon’s Best Hole in a Wall Restaurant- Jamicos Restaurant famous Crispy Pata. Though I am hungry and would like to eat as much as I want, I am actually nervous on this breakthrough that I need to accomplish as soon as possible. We ordered for a Large Crispy Pata, Torta, Pansit Miki-Bihon, Special Fried Rice and Hototay Soup.

The Crispy Pata is awesome! it is crispy, well cooked, and yes, it is one of Malabon’s Best. The other food was really filling and tastes good too. I just need to take some bite of Crispy Pata and had a cup of my favorite Hototay soup to be ready on my face off with my father. I am definitely on a peace mode and not expecting any high blood moments.

Anyway, I have a key to all of these breakthrough. My wife and daughter Zcy, whom I wanted to introduce to my Tatay. And I bet he will be surprise to meet Nancy, my daugher :) named after my mother.

So today is filling up our stomach first before the heavy drama moments. Thanks to Jamico’s restaurant for making us brave! and salute to their very friendly food value! We even have a take home from what we have ordered for 6 pax which is only worth almost P200 each. I will surely go back and buy this yummy Crispy Pata for take out.

Now, on to my breakthrough. The face off was really light, though I could feel the “curiosity” on what happened to my son? My intent is true on bringing my family there and close all issues and gaps we have for decades. It is my gesture of peace for him and his new family. I finally met my half-sister, and even embrace her mother. It could be the courage and guidance of my Nanay and Kuya in heaven, for sure they are smiling seeing us “together again”. We also visited our grandmother, Lola Idad with my Tatay who was so excited to show to the rest of the community in the streets that “Hey, Look at my sons and their family” we are now happy and at peace. I cant deny how happy I am deep inside that I was able to unlock all my fears and walk in the street with pride with a thoughts that everything should end well and we can all start anew. Thanks to my brother Mond as well for having an open mind and join me on this breakthrough, and yes, when I post our pictures in Facebook, so many people have commented and even cried for what they have witnessed. I am glad I was able to share some happiness and inspiration to others. I’ve got Super Likes and very touching messages in my Facebook wall which is not anymore a surprise. I just believe that forgiveness is the key so we can all start a new life. I believe I just connected some links to make the impossible, possible! And make unbelievable, believable.

Thanks to my StarShooter 83 family for bringing The Magnifico in me! and yes, I am a true blooded Malabon’s Best! burp! (its the Crispy Pata)

Magnifico & BraveHeart
