About Pahiyas Festival:

The Pahiyas Festival is a colorful festival held every15th day of May at Lucban Quezon a town at the foot of Mt. Banahaw, South of Luzon. It is held as an offer of gratitude to their patron saint San Isidro Labrador (St. Isidore the Worker) for the bountiful harvest. The festival’s name comes from the Filipino terms hiyas (jewel) and pahiyas (precious offering) The highlight of the festival is a procession along the streets of the image of San Isidro Labrador, to ensure the people’s bountiful harvest in the coming seasons. The procession features a pair of giant papier mâché figures of a farmer and his wife. This is followed by the image of the patron saint and his wife Sta. Maria de la Cabeza, who carries a basket with triangulo biscuits, which are given to the children during the procession. This culminates with generous sharing of food among the townspeople. Almost all the house on the parade route are adorned with their produce like , fruits, vegetables. flowers . leaves “pako” and “ kiping” (brightly colored rice made from a traditional recipe). Those who are involve with making buri hats or fans show off their colorful handiwork. On the other hand some hog-raisers flaunt their succulent “lechon” as offering. Lucbanins believe that a bountiful celebration will guarantee a more prosperous year for them. Each household tries to outdo each other in a friendly competition as they vie for the honor of being recognized for their creativity. Prizes are given to the winning pahiyas based on given criteria. The people not only compete for the cash prize given by the town but also for the attention of their neighbors and visitors.

As Lucban history reveals, the feat of San Isidro started in the 1500’s when the “Tagalogs” who lived at the foot of Mt. Banahaw celebrate with the simple offering to their “anitos” . As the natives where Christianized they went to the church to have their harvest blessed by the priest.

At present time, Pahiyas has became the feast of all feast . Local and foreign tourist flock to Lucban to savor the colorful sights and sumptuous food the amiable Lucbanins offer. It has kept the culture and religion alive. It also inncluded in the month long activities were the Langgonisa Festival and Tapas-Kayud competition where participants showcased the old traditional ways of preparing foods. There were also the kundiman and harana competitions which aimed to reiterate the romantic culture of courtship. This si to make the cebration more meaningful as wel as to revie old Filipino customs and traditions.

Surely, Anyone who witnessed this feast will go home with a full stomach and an overflow of fun and camaraderie. With the advent of the digital era, surely snapshots of this happy and colorful festival will cover the pages of websites, newspaper, magazines not to mention the pages of our minds where images of good times linger on.

And to continuously keep the history lives on this internet era, I am sharing my shots of Pahiyas 2010! This is another festivities every Filipino should witness and enjoy!

Sharing the beauty of the Philippines!

Feel the Heat of May, a hot sizzling sexy shoot with Ms Joy Inocencio. I only knew Joy from Facebook and she sent me a message for an opportunity shot during her visit in Manila. This photo shoot was a collaboration with Nell Antopina who’s based in Singapore and in Manila for a project assignment.

The look and feel for Day 1 is Foxy and Sexy. I want Joy to look different from her previous photo shoot and make it like a high fashion cover magazine like peg. I toned the color for the Foxy and Sexy as inspired by the AX and CK photographers. Day 2 is a different look for Mid-Eastern profile of Joy.

It was a very fulfilling 2 days of photo shoot with Nel and Joy. Thanks to you guys! most especially to the wonder hands of our MUA, Ms Anna Latina Simbol

Coron Palawan Travel Adventure Day 3 & 4

Coron Palawan Travel Adventure Day 3 & 4

April 12/13, 2010
Coron, Palawan
Philippines

The Coron Adventure Itinerary:

April 12, 2010: Our destinations- Kayangan Lake, Siete Pecados, Banul Beach and Twin Lakes.

7am: Kayangan Lake is totally the best lake i visited so far. From the mountain top, you can see the famous “coron shot” of the twin islands with the blue water with rows of bancas in the shore and there’s also a cave with beautiful yellow stones formation just at your back. I am totally proud being in this place and I do admire the indigenous people of Tagbanua for preserving the beauty of this islands. Their message to the tourist visitors: “Take nothing but pictures, Leave nothing but footprints, Kill nothing but Time, Keep nothing but Memories.

CORON PALAWAN

Swimming in the lake, you can feel being one with nature, the fresh water, the clearest lake I’ve ever seen here in the Philippines, and most of all, no commercial establishments around 🙂 just the sound of nature, the cheerful tourists saying wows and omg!…and yes I’m still in the Philippines.

10am: From Kayangan, we sailed to Twin Lakes and we have witnessed the scenic island formations and the black stone curved by nature which is amazingly beautiful. And when we reached the Twin Lakes, I was mesmerized on this wonderful natures beauty! This is Pilipinas! and I should showcase it to the world! The water mixes from salt to fresh and it looks like an oil/water mix up but its not, and there is a short passage to swim from the sea salt water to the fresh water and you will be welcome by a school of fish…really a wonderful experience!

12:30pm: We sailed to Banul Beach for our lunch, and yes it was included in our package. What’s for lunch? we had a grilled fresh squids and fish sinigang, crabs and lato, and fresh mangoes for dessert. Yum yum!
At first, I thought the island was just an ordinary beach shore, until I walked around and see the amazing black rock formations and cliffs. You can spend all day in the white sands shaded by the black rock formations with Kalachuchi trees in between. Truly I am one with nature 🙂

2:30pm: Off to Siete Pecados, a known snorkeling area in the Island of Coron. But since I had so much of swimming and snorkeling on Day 2, I just went down for 15 minutes and noticed this tiny soft gels spread out all over the water. I thought it was just a water bubbles, until I focus and realize its moving like a jelly fish, and i start itching! I went up immediately and ask our boatman what are those tiny floating things and yes, it’s a jelly fish! I never went back in the water since I bet I swallowed some of them already when I am swimming and opening my mouth to breath! Maybe this area requires the tourists to wear a dive suit for skin protection. Next time I will wear one.

330pm: Back to Coron Town. They offered another island but I believe I had enough and got scared of the tiny jelly fish so in my mind I wanted to take a bath and get rid of the itch bites in my body. It was almost a 45 min boat sail until we reached our hotel.

5pm – Lambingan Bridge. I think this is the main loading and unloading port area for tourist and passengers. Nothing fancy to checkout, but just in time for the sunset 🙂 and had my tripod for the long exposure silky water shot.

630pm – back to Michaelangelo’s hotel, on our way I bought some pork barbecues and had some cold beers while watching the sunset colors from the hotel.

730pm- we had our dinner in Mila Gamboa’s office. She cooked for us – lobster and grilled fish plus lato. Yummy!

Day 4: Shop around Corod Town for dried fish and Kasuy nuts, prepared our things and drive to Busuanga Airport. Say goodbye to my new travel buddies in the airport and fly back to Manila. This time Cebu Pacific is on time. Very Good! And btw, I hope that the airport authorities will soon have their luggage scanners soon! I pity the security guards opening and checking all the luggages piece by piece.

Until next from my life best shots,

Rman

The Coron Palawan Travel Adventure Day 1 & 2

The Coron Palawan Travel Adventure Day 1 & 2

April 10 and 11, 2010
Coron Palawan
Philippines

The Coron Adventure Itinerary:

April 9, 2010 – Manila Public Holiday (Day of Valor), we booked at Cebu Pacific for the Manila-Busuanga flight and would like to take advantage of the Long Weekends. We were already at the airport by 10am for the 1pm flight. And by 1:15pm- they cancel the flight! they said its an aircraft technical problems. As expected all the passenger got angry and questioned the announcements, asking for refund, rebooking, monetary damages. Cebu Pacific however offers, an overnight hotel accommodation (a second rate hotel somewhere in Roxas Blvd), 500 Pesos for transportation if you want to go home, and a refund of the airport fee. And I didnt avail any and signed any documents to waive my complaints. The Customer Service Manager is nowhere to be found, they attend to each complaint one by one without any standard response, we even get our bags individually, and worse the Cebu Pacific Staff do have this so called – “that is not part of my job” “im not from that department” “please speak to this person for your concern” – passing the back! they’ll be sure a good football player in the field! We also thought we are lucky enough to have this VIP co passengers who said they were former ambassadors to the UN and ambassadors to ADB asking for our signature to file for a block complaint but it seems the aircraft personnel gave them a special treatment of flying them out on a special aircraft and booking leaving us all behind. Bravo to you Madame Ambassador!

April 10, 2010 – Atlas! Welcome to Coron, Palawan Day 1. We first went to our hotel then proceed to Mt. Tapias for 746 steps climb! and its worth it. On top, one will have the birds eye view of Coron town, Coron bay and its islands, the road to Busuanga, the sprouting commercial buildings and the greenery of Coron. Very Beautiful indeed, most capturing the bay on sunset. So another 746 steps going down and we proceed to Maquinit Hot Springs, a 38 degrees Celsius salt water hot spring in the mangrove area. There are two hot pools adjacent to the spring, both cascade down into a larger pool, the water flows directly into the sea. This place is ideal to visit in the late afternoon or evening, after the tour. Our served dinner – lobster and fish sinigang (sour soup) with the palawan famous sidedish “Lato” seaweed commonly known as “sea grapes” because they look like a bunch of small green grapes, and when bitten into it releases refreshing saltwater into one’s mouth.

April 11, 2010 – We woke up as early as 3am for a trip to Calauit Island. The countrys major conservation showcase and unique nature park. It showcases a successful trans-location of African animals from Kenya in Africa such as, giraffes and elands, zebras and gazelles co-exist with endemic Philippine animals, like the Palawan bearcat, mousedeer and peacock pheasant. It was a long-wait boat ride for almost 6 hours! from a rough to a smooth ride till sunrise. On the way, I also witnessed a pearl farm said owned by the Japanese investors and it was a huge volume that is being farmed out from the Philippine sea to Japan market to the world. They said we are a poor country, are we? maybe poor government governance to protect our natural resources. On the other note, Calauit is really a good place to witness a Safari like adventure less the elephants, wild tigers and the lions. We really had fun with the zebras and giraffe’s anyway.

The boat ride going back with the sun up was really scenic and beautiful. We hop at the Black Island for lunch and went to a cave with a lake inside, had a snorkeling activities in Cogbatan Beach and it became my longest hour of snorkeling and farthest freestyle swimming so far. Had a ship wreck skin diving too and yes, I need to brush up my scuba diving soon to go back soon and enjoy the beauty of underwater life. Also, Im thankful for the wonderful group who filled the boat with laughters and fun. Cheers to my new travel buddies and friends!

Mothers Day Special, A first time Mommy

Mothers Day Special, A first time Mommy

Today, we celebrate Mothers Day! And my first that I can no longer hug and kiss my mom on this special day. But anyhow, I can still feel that she’s just around and protecting us, and the power of her undying love is what empowers me to face all the battles of life and make her proud. To you Nanay! l miss you so much! and I love you. I offer every shot of love and those beautiful smile of every person from each shutter clicks. My photography is you 🙂

So today, I am honoring all the mothers of the world! and most to First Time Mommy’s. I believe this is the most exciting part of a woman’s life- being a mother the first time. Their test of patience and wonderful life changing experience is truly remarkable. A salute to all First time Mommy and Mothers of the World!

Here I feature, Ms Emmy Jimenez-De Leon and her cutest son Quino. My first mommy and a baby portrait, and I asked her to write a letter to Quino and make a documented history of a mothers love. Here it is..

Son,

A pretty picture of you and me. This day we both looked dressed well and good, perfectly captured and beautifully angled.
How I desire that to bring you up and experience this kind of milieu everyday, perfect and beautiful, but I can’t and I will not.
As you grow up you will see imperfections, you will see good and bad, you will feel happiness and sadness,
you will claim success and failure. You will win … You will lose. All these experiences will mold you, and will define you.
and it is my promise and the same time my prayer, that i will be there as you go through life’s journey and make sure that you will be molded well.
I cannot live your life for you, but along the way i will be there doing my best … guiding, protecting, nurturing, and loving.

-Mom

Aliwan Fiesta 2010, A Colorful Celebration of Life from 7107 Philipppines Island

Aliwan Fiesta 2010, A Colorful Celebration of Life from 7107 Philipppines Island

April 24, 2010
Mall of Asia

Aliwan Fiesta is always the most awaited annual event for most of the photographers like me. I opted to skip my Sunset Run in Greenfield and brave the strong heat at 2pm to shoot in MOA. As expected, the colorful costumes, floats and beautiful parade muses makes the photographers go wild! as their shutter clicks sounds like a drum beat.

This seems to be a long walk for the participants marching from MOA to Star City, but I prefer the recent formation area which is huge enough for the participants to practice their dance piece.

Kudos to the organizer! A job well done and Congratulations to the Winners!
