A must see place in NYC! I was there for about an hour appreciating the cathedral architectural beauty and its fine details. I wish I could name all the Altars in my shot collections, maybe I’ll go back soon and make notes. So far this is the Grandest Medieval Architecture I’ve ever seen in USA.

Aliwan Fiesta 2009, Festival of 7,107 Philippines Island

A yearly event being sponsored by Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC), a pioneering radio station in the Philippines and the largest broadcasting network in Asia. Aliwan Fiesta is a festival of different cultures in the Philippines, its a parade of intricate and well designed costumes, a thematic rythmic of dance and scynchronize movements, an equivalent floats as gorgeous as the Pasadena Rose Parade and the beautiful muses representing a true Pinay.

This year, I had an opportunity to witness this great event and took my best shot. The subjects were very overwhelming, and yes! its a photographers haven. I would say it’s an event every Pinoy Photographer shouldn’t missed. And did you know that the next year 2010 winner will represent the Philippines for the World Street Dance Competition? so watch out for the 2010 more colorful shots!

Winners of Aliwan Fiesta 2009 are as follows:

First Place:  Buyogan Festival of Buyogan Leyte
Second Place:  Tribu Kasag of Banate Iloilo
Third Place:  Tribu Paghinadaet (Dinagyang) of Iloilo

Sharing the best smiles of Aliwan Fiesta 2009! Viva Senor!

The Best of Corregidor Island, A Friendship and Heroes Remembrance Day

Corregidor Island (the Island of Correction)

Corregidor comes from the Spanish word “to correct”, there were some claims that during the Spanish Era it was used a penitentiary or correctional institution and called El Corregidor. At that same era, this was also known as the ship gate way entering Manila Bay or modernly known as Bureau of Customs, wherein documents needs to be checked and corrected before docking to Manila bay.

The tadpole shaped island also became the American military reservation area where historic battles with the Japanese during World War II.  Should you want to know more about the Corregidor World War 2 secrets, there’s a good reading reference at www.corregidor.org about the code room and “cryptanalysis”.

The island as per my perspective is very strategic by location. The building structures ruins reflects good engineering, planning and logistics of the US  Military . The fortress of defense where many heroes was made and being remembered to date. And their death results to nations friendships. A salute to bravery and compassionate love for a nations victory and freedom.

Below is the message inscribed in the Pacific Memorial War Wreath;

“Sleep, my sons, your duty done, for Freedom’s light has come; sleep in the silent depths of the sea, or in your bed of hallowed sod, until you hear at dawn the low, clear reveille of God.”

Monday Cooking Experiment – Baked Fish and Spanish Sardines Pasta

It’s Monday! and I am craving for good food. So I decided to cook and prepare another unique dish without any guide but only my test buds.

For Monday, I want to eat Fish, not fried, not boiled but baked. So if its baked, a Pasta will be a good combination, but  I still want a consistency of a Fish taste with a creamy sauce for my pasta- so my supermarket list ends this way.

Fish Gindara almost 1/2 kilo @ P128

Fresh Basil Leaves, you can have this on a  pre-packed mini size @ P17.20

Onion Spring mini bundle @ P14.75

Fresh Mushroom Shitake,  1 package @P71.00

Spaghettini Chirico Pasta Noodle, 1 package @P75

American Heritagae Cream Cheese, 1 package @P92

Next time, I’ll try to include the amount/weights, my only reference for now is my receipt. Anyway, here are the additional items from my Grocery Cabinet, I dont have the price but for sure its an easy to find at your favorite supermarket.

AjiShiho Garlic Flavor 2 packs

Olive Oil (6 table spoons)

McCormick Black Pepper mill (1 teaspoon)

McCormick Garlic Granules (2 spoons)

Spanish Sardines 1 bottle

Walsh Grenadine Syrup, 2 table spoon

Nestle All Purpose Cream 1 pack

Baked Fish Procedures:

You dont need a huge oven for this, all I’ve got is a mini oven, this is the typical wedding gift or a Christmas raffle unit.

  • Place your Fish in an Aluminum Foil, extend it to a size you can fully wrap it after you put all the ingredients.
  • Put a Handful of Chopped Fresh Basil Leaves on top of the Fish
  • Sprinkle the following: black pepper mill, garlic granules and Ajishiho garlic
  • Wrap it tight and place it on your mini oven for 15 mins.
  • After 15 mins, unwrapped and pour the grenadine syrup. Place it back to the oven leave the foil open for another 10 mins.

Pasta Noodle Procedures:

  • This is very easy, boiling water add 3 table spoon of olive oil. And place your pasta noodle. Roughly 15 to 20 mins for this type of Pasta to make it firm.

Spanish Sardines Pasta Sauce:

  • Pre heat your sauce pan.
  • Chopped Shitake Mushrooms  (4 slices per piece is okay)
  • Chopped Onion Springs. (not too minced like)
  • Pour your remaining olive oil on the sauce pan.
  • Cook the spanish sardines in a saute style, mashed it in olive oil and add the chopped onion spring (5 mins)
  • Add Chopped Shitake Mushroom, saute for another 5 mins
  • Add All Purpose Cream, stir for 2 mins
  • Add Cream Cheese, stir for 5 mins
  • Pour the AjiShiho pack, the amount depends your salty taste buds

Please check the pictures to see the ingredients and the before and after look. The red sauce is the grenadine syrup. I prefer to use it to add color and sweet, otherwise this menu will look so plain and pale.

How much it cost me?  Approximately P600 plus the labor of love of cooking.

Good for 4 servings at P150 each.

Leave a comment and let me know if you like it.

Enjoy eating!

May Festival of Flowers 2009 Part 3 – Shades of Pink and Violet

The Shades of Pink symbolizes feminism while Violet represents light and vision. I called it “Barbie Dolls” colors and “Disney’s Princess” lovely gowns. The shades of pink, truly represents little girls fondness – baby pink and becoming a woman – hot pink! And for violets, the flowers itself and how it blooms.

May Festival of Flowers 2009 Part 2 (Shades of Red and Orange)

Here’s another set of fresh red and orange flowers  shots from different locations. I intend to include the sets of orange shades, a cross of red and yellow colors being its blends somehow.

Shades of Orange, It is bright and symbolizes Thanksgiving. There’s not so much study about the Orange Color since its a secondary or a mix of basic color.

Shades of Red stir the emotions of anger, passion and love.  It’s a symbol of courage and sacrifice and commonly used as the color that signals warning.  It’s being associated with Fire and Planet Mars.

My definition. It’s hot and beauty! whats yours? and please comment on your favorite Red Flowers too.

May Festival of Flowers 2009 Part 1. Shades of Yellow

Flower Power! The month of May is the Fiesta Season of the Philippines and the most popular event is “Flores de Mayo”Flores, from Spanish “flores” or Flowers of May. This is also a celebration of Flower Offerings in honor of Mama Mary

In celebration, let me show you my photograph collection of  flowers, starting with Yellow colors. Why Yellow? It’s Sunshine! and the color promotes cheerfulness. But wait, Yellow means they are a coward so yellow can have a negative meaning in some cultures, some says it’s jealousy? The meanings can be contradicting but I am hoping that all of these flowers promotes beauty and joy to my viewers.  Can you name some of them for me?

These shots were from different locations:

Fort Funston, SFO. CA. USA

Another Mothers Day

This blog post is truly very special.  I have asked a very good friend to write a Letter for her mom on Mothers Day.

Cynthia
Cynthia

Dear Mommy,

I ran my fingertips on your name. Finally, they were rightly spelled… but it did not make me feel better.

I smile back for every glance at you… yet I know this twinge of grin cannot totally hide the pinch of pain. I still want to hold you.

My childhood memories engulf me with thoughts of you, Mommy. The resting of my head on your lap while I watch cartoons; or simply twirling my arms around your neck or curling up with you in bed when thunderstorm rumbled in the sky. I enjoyed going with you in the market and together we would touch the fishes and crabs we would buy.

I couldn’t help but to laugh over the time we shared with a burger because I ran out of budget during a treat out in the mall. Awkward it may seem to bring you along in the movie house with my boyfriend… but who cares!!! Some memories, indeed! Things of the past…but exactly what I was longing to happen again…

Since the day you left, I felt incomplete. Physically whole but emotionally crashed and crippled. And now that I am dealing with adult life, I yearn for you.

With all the struggles I encounter since you had been away, I always show a face of strength. The demands of parental singleness was never outspoken to be depressing. Always “only” words of hopes. Work on dreams. Smile on pains… For the sake of my children.

It was only you as a mother, who can trace the wring of breakdown behind my smile. You perfectly understand why every time I face you in my dreams, I melt to tears, I shake with fear, I shatter with disappointments. It is the real “me”…. And no one can ever pacify and secure me but you. You are still my ground, the earth where I stand. And even though I am already a mother, I still need you around.

How funny I was to rush on growing up, only to wish of being a child again afterwards. No, it is not the physical aspect of being a small kid running around you that yearns me back, Mommy. It is the warmth of your presence on my side.

Your name made of golden steel shines with the reflection of sunlight. The photograph of your face never gets tired of smiling back at me every minute I spent quiet moment here with you in the sanctuary. Yet, it did not make my feeling better… realizing I am here and you were somewhere out there – we are apart.

I have been looking forward every sleep just to have the chance of talking with you again. It was only in my dreams where I could spend valuable time with you like old times. And it is only there, where I can feel protected under the hug and snuggle of your arms again…

I miss you so much, Mommy. Another Mother’s Day passed without you.

Love,
Cynthia
